megalies

The name megalies is not a reflection of a huge feeling of superiority, nor is it a protest against the falseness of the world.

It's quite simple. When I had to choose an e-mail username, it had to have at least 8 characters. Liesbeth seemed the logical choice, but another Liesbeth had registered that name already. My love for music then made me pay tribute to my favourite band Mega City Four, combined with the first part of my name. I thought it pretty funny that this led to the showy name megalies.

In Dutch lies has no actual meaning and only when I started to visit english-speaking newsgroups did I realise its meaning in English. I rather liked the ambiguity and have kept the name ever since.

my website

self-portrait

Pretty soon after I bought a computer with modem in 1997, I made a website. That site was very simple, made with Netscape Composer, and it only had some basic information about my taste in music and about me. I had wanted to add far more, but besides writing a film page I never got round to that.

In the meantime websites got better and flashier. My old website looked very out of date, and so I started thinking about a new one. I got a big book about HTML from the library, but never got beyond chapter 2 (although I had kept the book for 4 whole months). Then when I found out that on the Internet there are lots of tutorials and resources for making websites, that's how I started to learn how to build a website from scratch.

I started building a site with HTML and CSS code, mostly with the aid of two Dutch websites. And I have looked at the source code of some of my favourite websites to learn how to get my site the way I wanted it. One of the main things I learned from that is to work with external style sheets. No doubt it was the best decision I made; it makes it so much easier to make changes to the appearance of the site.

Although I have started with HTML 4, I changed to XML after a while. Which apparently makes me more prepared for the future. Oh well, I do my best to apply the rules properly, and I validate everything I make. What more can a girl do?

content

The old megalies website had some information about me, though very little in English, and one page about my fave music and one about my fave films. And then there were some bits and pieces, mostly pictures, which weren't even always linked to my page.

I figured I could do better than that and designed a structure with main categories (the colours), each of which can have as many subpages as needed. Because in the music and film categories there are lots of topics which do not fit in one sub-category, I added spotlight pages.

megalies.com

It's a bit over the top maybe, to have my own domain name. But it's fun, and through this place you get a redirect for 20 dollars a year. The webspace doesn't cost anything extra, since it's included in our internet subscription. And I would have been pretty pissed off if someone had snatched away 'my own' megalies domain.

Let me be the first to say that things may not be all perfect on this website. They are in my dreams, of course, but when it comes to perfectionism I'm actually working hard to face the reality of life. If you encounter things that do not work, or look so weird that you suspect that I didn't mean it that way, I would love to hear it, so I can potter about some more.

Enjoy your visit to megalies.com!
